The May 16, 2022 installment of Jake Schoeneberger’s random entertainment opinions
While May could have felt like nothing more than a countdown to Stranger Things 4 and Kenobi, I’ve actually been lucky enough to discover a gem I’d missed before. That’s one great thing about streaming; it’s never too late to enjoy a show you may have missed when it was first released.
With that in mind, here are some random thoughts about the entertainment I’m currently consuming.
This Installment’s Edition of Jake Schoeneberger Has Been Living Under a Rock Features: Daredevil
*This will contain spoilers for anyone who hasn’t watched the show yet.*
The first four episodes of Daredevil have been nothing short of amazing. They perfectly encapsulate everything I love about this character. I’m hoping it will continue to get even better.
The beginning of the fifth episode finally gives us a glimpse into how Daredevil sees the world. He describes it as a “world on fire.” He sees a mix of sound, pressure and temperature changes, and smells blending into a colorful view of his surroundings. This was a very cool way to represent his “vision,” which every fan of the character knows is a huge piece of how his stories play out. His heightened senses and his vision of the world is part of the appeal of this character.
An absolutely stunning moment came when the two cops are interviewing the captured Russian. The Russian says the name “Wilson Fisk,” so the cops pretend he attacked them and shoot him. The drama and surprise of that moment was shocking, and it further drives home just how much control Fisk has over every player in this game.
The dinner date between Fisk and Vanessa was masterful. It shows not only the human nature of Fisk, but also the darker side of Vanessa. She knows he’s a dangerous man, but she calls him an artist because of his vision of changing the city. He says he does the cruel things he does because the city “isn’t a caterpillar. It doesn’t spin a cocoon and emerge a butterfly.” This is a brilliant way to describe why he does what he does, and a brilliant way to show why Vanessa might admire him.
The string of explosions at the end of the episode was just as shocking as the cops murdering the Russian suspect. Even Matt didn’t realize how masterfully Fisk was moving against the Russian contingent. Fisk is always one step ahead and he will absolutely be a formidable force for Daredevil to contend with.
The episode saved its biggest shock for the end, though, as we saw Daredevil get arrested by the police just as the episode closed. This is a crazy cliffhanger to leave the show on, and every episode leaves the viewer dying to get to the next chapter. The show definitely ratchets up the suspense with each passing episode and I’m glad I’m finally getting to enjoy this show.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, if there’s one thing Jacob Schoeneberger can count on in the entertainment world it’s Marvel. This franchise turns out one entertaining movie/show after another. They really understand character development, they understand riveting plotlines, and they understand how to best employ their character commodities. Every show they’ve made keeps you hanging from one episode to the next and they get you deeply emotionally invested in the characters. I’m looking forward to continuing to watch this and I’m sure it gets even better as the seasons go on.
I love Charlie Cox as Murdock, but he hasn’t had his cathartic emotional moment the way D’Onofrio already has with Fisk. I know it’s coming, and I look forward to it, but thus far Murdock has been mostly stoic and calculating. I can’t wait to see what Cox, a fine actor, has to offer when the emotions start running higher for Murdock.
The Jake Schoeneberger Random Entertainment Thought of the Day
Will Stranger Things 4 be enough to save Netflix for me? I really can’t think of many reasons to hold onto the channel other than this show. And I really didn’t love the third season so it’s a lot to ask for the fourth to redeem itself. But if there’s one thing Jake Schoeneberger loves it’s the 80s, so you can never rule out Stranger Things! The first two seasons were insanely great.
